Research background
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a four-amino-acid peptide with an alternating aromatic-cationic structure that causes it to concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane. It associates specifically with cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively there. That targeting is the reason it appears in mitochondrial research: published work examines cardiolipin interaction, electron-transport-chain function and oxidative stress in cell and animal models. SS-31 has been the subject of clinical investigation by its developer; that programme is separate from, and says nothing about, material supplied for laboratory research. Research Use Only.
